目连救母指的是释迦牟尼佛的神通第一弟子目犍连（简称目连、目莲）以神通能力到达饿鬼道，见母亲身受饿鬼之苦，最终借十方众僧威神之力使母亲解脱的。上座部佛教的记载是目建连得到佛陀的指示就在七月十五日供养许多证得阿罗汉僧侣每人一钵净水每个钵放一支杨枝，僧侣喝时先用杨枝净水布施无量饿鬼【这也许是施食饿鬼的起源】，再将功德回向目连的亡母，亡母承罗汉僧侣们的回向加持脱离饿鬼转生畜牲道做了一支黑狗，后来听目连说法七天而亡转生三十三天为天神，才算救母成功。
